Maurizio Miccichи founded in 1980 an international wine-making company, Casa Vinicola Calatrasi.
Their purpose was to produce premium wines made from grapes grown in their estates or under precise monitoring of their agronomists’ control.
In 2005, after adopting a policy of significant investments in advanced technologies, Calatrasi had a turnover of over 15 million euros, distributing its wines in more than 25 countries all over the world and becoming one of the most important wineries in Sicily.
The winery is situated in San Cipirello, in the heart of Jato Valley, 30 km south from Palermo.
The establishment of 25000 sqm includes a bottling plant of 12000 bottles per hour and a barrel room with 4000 French and Us barriques.
The family estates in Sicily are located in Campofiorito (274 ha, near Corleone), Ginestra (100 ha between San Cipirello and Piana degli Albanesi) and Mazara (150 ha). Different varieties are cultivated in these areas: from native vines - Nero D’Avola, Cataratto and Grillo- to international ones such as Viognier, Chardonnay, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Calatrasi is also present in Apulia and Tunisia where , during the last five years, two wineries have been built. In Apulia, the Calatrasi estate is located in the Salento area and it has 240 ha of vineyards of Primitivo and Syrah. Last but not least , the estate in Tunisia, called Domaine Neferis, is situated between Tunis and Hammamet.
It consists of a winery, a bottling plant and 200Ha of vineyards where many varieties grow - from Carignac, Syrah to Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah and Chardonnay. Besides, an old Chateau, built in 1900, offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding area. Thanks to its foreign high-skilled staff of agronomists and oenologist, Calatrasi is the leader of a new wine-making culture, mixing the ancient traditions of the South of Italy with advanced technologies and new flavours.
