In night among 14 and on January 15th, 1968 a violent earthquake completely destroyed Gibellina and other six town of the valley of the Belice. This earthquake killed 1150 people and 98,000 remained without house. To remember the victims of this disaster and given the impossibility to rebuild the town in the same position it was decided to build the Big Cretto. This was realized by Alberto Burri as a white sudarium on what remains of the dead town. His cracks express the strength and the violence of the nature. The work, the biggest in Italy and one of the most important of the world, show the map of the streets of the missing town. The work consists in a huge casting of white cement which compacts the twelve hectares of rubble. It was begun in 1984 and finished in 1989. The rubble was destroyed by the army; picked up with bulldozer, compacted and kept together by metal nets. Above these homogeneous blocks the white liquid cement was strained. Every fissure is 2-3 meters wide, while the blocks are about 1,60 meter high. The blocks and fissures layout retreads in good part the town planning map, with the roads and the recluses. Has form of an irregular quadrilateral of about 400 x 300 meters . The blocks measure 10-20 meters of side.
